Do You Have to Renew Your Car Registration in Person?

Renewing your vehicle’s registration is often a daunting task, especially if you go in person. Thankfully, renewing your vehicle’s registration in person is not required in Florida. In fact, it is recommended that you renew your car registration online for the easiest, quickest experience.

How Do You Renew Your Car Registration in Florida?

Whether you renew your vehicle’s registration online or at a local DMV, you will need certain information. To renew your car’s registration in Florida, you must be ready to provide:

  • A valid driver’s license or Florida ID
  • Proof of valid auto insurance
  • Payment for renewal fees

There are also options to mail your registration in, but you will have to confirm this service with your local DMV to make sure your vehicle is properly registered.

How Much Does It Cost?

The cost of renewing your registration varies primarily depending on the weight of your vehicle. You could pay around $20 to renew your vehicle if it is a typical automobile rate. The more your vehicle ways, however, the higher your renewal registration fee. This is a one-time payment that you must pay in order to renew your vehicle’s registration. It is not a recurring expense, such as a car payment or car insurance.

Can You Renew Registration Without Insurance in Florida?

Since the state of Florida requires all vehicles to carry a minimum amount of insurance, you will not be able to register a vehicle or renew a registration on a vehicle that is not insured. Keep in mind that car insurance requirements vary by state. In Florida, all drivers must carry at least $10,000 in personal injury protection and $10,000 in property damage liability. You may have higher limits on your vehicle, but these are the minimum requirements in order to register your vehicle.

If you have a lapse in coverage during the time in which you try to renew your vehicle’s registration, your request may be denied until you once again have coverage. This is true even for vehicles that are not being driven or is in a different state. For example, if you are spending an extended vacation out of the state or country and your policy lapses, you could still face issues when trying to renew your registration. Also keep in mind that a lapse in car insurance coverage often leads to higher premiums.
