Why You Should Never Let Your Car Insurance Lapse

Paper that has Insurance Policy written on it and a set of car keys on top

Some people question why they need to have car insurance. They might not have a vehicle worth much value, or they might think they can cover the costs of accidents themselves. Regardless of these facts, most drivers need insurance. If you fail to have it, then you might face a variety of cost burdens and other penalties.

Why Drivers Need Car Insurance

Owning and driving a car is financially and personally risky for all drivers. That’s why people buy car insurance. It can help them pay the recovery costs of accidents and other vehicle hazards.

As a result, most states require drivers to carry certain coverage to legally drive. The responsible driver should also increase their coverage to provide themselves with optimized protection. Failing to carry a policy, on the other hand might leave you exposed in more ways than one. For example:

  • You’ll Have No Protection on the Road

If you don’t have car insurance, then you’ll have no help when you have a wreck or face another vehicle loss. That might mean a lot of costly repairs that you must pay on your own.

Plus, if the accident is your fault, then you might have to pay for the damage done to other drivers or property. That’s an even higher legal liability. Often, it is much cheaper to pay a regular insurance premium than to face the full cost accidents on your own.

  • The Authorities Might Revoke Your Driving Privileges

Because states require carry car insurance, they also can penalize drivers who don’t. In some states, drivers have the option to self-insure. However, they still must declare to the DMV that they will do so and possibly pay a fee. Drivers who simply drive uninsured without taking the right steps can face a loss of driving privileges and heavy fines.

  • Future Insurance Premiums Might Increase

If you have every driven uninsured, then that means you have engaged in a very risky activity. Therefore, if you try to get a policy in the future, your insurer might view you as more of a risky investment. As a result, they might have to charge you more for your coverage.

  • You Might Become Ineligible for Future Insurance

Some insurers cannot afford to make a risky investment in drivers who have driven uninsured. As a result, they might rule that driver ineligible for some or all of their insurance services. Therefore, it might be harder for you to get covered in the future.

In some cases, you might have to buy a high-risk driver policy, or file for an SR-22 certificate, to be able to get coverage. It is always simpler to always have car insurance for as long as you are a registered driver. You'll not only have protection, but will develop a foundation of trust that could save you money later on.
