Getting Your Vehicle Registered in Florida

Moving to a new state can be an exciting and thrilling experience. It also comes with expectations, and Florida is no exception. Establishing residency should be something to consider if you plan on moving to Florida, which oftentimes coincides with setting up and domicile and registering your vehicle with the state.

All Florida drivers are required to register their motor vehicles. By law, obtaining titles and receiving tags is also mandatory for Florida drivers. The process can be confusing if you are moving to Florida from a different state. This blog will explain the process so you can better understand how to go about registering your car.

How Do I Register My Vehicle?
To properly register your vehicle in Florida, you must acquire both a Florida license plate and a title issued by the state (regardless of the state in which you purchased your vehicle).

Several regulations govern when you must obtain Florida registration for your vehicle:

  • In general, you must complete the application process for a Florida tag within 30 days of establishing residency in the state.

  • You will also have to file for Florida registration if you become permanently employed in the state or enroll your child in a public school within Florida.

Which Documents Do I Need? car driving in autumn
Once you start the process of registering your vehicle, you must have appropriate documentation. In particular, you must:

  • Have proof of identity (Photo ID) to register the vehicle.

  • If you need to get a Florida driver’s license, you must visit your local Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles office. Specific licensing requirements will depend on your citizenship status.

  • Purchase car insurance that meets all requirements set by Florida law.

  • Present an existing proof of the out-of-state title for the vehicle.

  • If you have a lien on your car, we can help you obtain verification of the out-of-state title.

  • Transfer the title to Florida. To do so, complete Form HSMV 82040—Application for Certificate of Title With/Without Registration.

  • Have an inspection and verification of the car’s vehicle identification number (VIN). This process is included on Form HSMV 82040. All vehicle owners must sign Form HSMV 82040.

  • Pay applicable taxes and fees on the vehicle.

Vehicle registrations will habitually expire. It is typical for a vehicle’s registration to expire on the owner’s birthday. It’s also important to note that the expectation in the state of Florida is to retag your vehicle every decade. Be sure to contact our agency for any additional questions or concerns.
