Auto Insurance Costs for College Students: What to Expect

A teen preparing to go to college needs to update his or her auto insurance policy. Doing so may reflect some key benefits.

Depending on the situation, the cost of insurance may drop. In other cases, it is important to let the agent know about the changes. Getting ready to go off to school means preparing many things. Your auto insurance is just one of them.

Are You Leaving the Car at Home?

Many teens do not drive their vehicle around campus. If you plan to leave the car at home, update your car insurance. A vehicle not in use still needs coverage. However, the amount of risk is significantly less. As a result, your agent may reduce the limits or costs of coverage at this point. If someone else will drive the vehicle full-time, be sure your insurance agency knows that, too. This may alter the type of coverage you have and need.

Are You Driving to and From School?

Some college students live and home and commute. This means you will be driving your vehicle a lot. If you are driving a long distance, be sure to update your car insurance plan to reflect this. Most often, this only applies to drivers who will significantly change the amount of driving they are doing. Some insurers may reduce low mileage discounts at this point.

You Are Getting Older

Another good reason to check in with your auto insurance provider now is your age. As you get a bit older, you become more sure of yourself behind the wheel. You may no longer be a new driver. As a result, you may be less of a risk to the insurance company. For women, turning 18 or 19 may indicate a drop in insurance coverage. For men, this typically happens after they turn 21. Most importantly, be sure your driving record is clean. You do not want to pay more if you have reckless driving tickets.

Every driver should update his or her auto insurance with their agent on a routine basis. Before you renew your car insurance coverage each year, check-in. When you do this, your agent can help you find discounts that may apply. You may also learn about ways to reduce your insurance further, such as with apps that track your mileage and driving habits. Being a safe driver matters. Be sure your agent knows you are one.
