Who Needs Flood Insurance?
The amount of flood insurance you need depends on the flood risk in your area. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) determines how susceptible specific properties are to flooding by assigning each area a flood zone risk designation. According to FEMA, high-risk flood zones have a 25% chance of flooding at least once in thirty years.
Florida has many of the highest risk flood zones in the United States. Homeowners in Florida with a federally backed mortgage and who live in a high-risk flood zone are required to purchase flood insurance. But flood insurance may be a good idea—even if it isn’t required. In fact, over 20% of FEMA’s total flood insurance claims come from areas that have been deemed low- to moderate-risk.

Who Can Buy Flood Insurance?
You don’t have to live in a high-risk flood zone to purchase flood insurance. Any homeowner or renter can buy flood insurance in Florida through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or from a private insurer.
